Denise Messina joined the College of Dentistry faculty as an Assistant Professor - Clinical part-time in 2017. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education and Certificate of Dental Hygiene from The Ohio State University in 1986 and her Master of Dental Hygiene in 2019. She began her Dental Hygiene teaching career at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland in 1995 where she was adjunct faculty in clinical and pre-clinical dental hygiene courses, periodontal clinical instructor, and course director in General and Oral Histopathology. In addition to teaching from 1995 - 2017, she practiced clinical dental hygiene from 1986 - 2017. She began a full-time faculty appointment in 2019 and is course director for Oral Radiography, Oral Histology, Care for Patients with Special Needs, Practice Management, and Contemporary Issues in Dental Hygiene. Ms. Messina is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association and was past Vice-President of the Cleveland Dental Hygienists' Association.
Ms. Messina's research interests include the use of social media in dental and dental hygiene education.
Clinical interests include the development of evidence-based skills evaluations for undergraduate dental hygiene students, oral radiography, professionalism and ethics.
