Advanced Endodontics Residency

Welcome to Ohio State's Advanced Endodontics Program

Our 27-month residency program is primarily designed to train endodontic specialists for private practice, although students interested in teaching or research can also pursue these goals within the program. At least 50 percent of the program time will be spent in clinical endodontics, with emphasis on emergency care. The remainder of your time will involve advanced course work in the biological sciences and endodontics, research, and teaching in the predoctoral clinic.

Teaching

Each student is required to participate in predoctoral clinical teaching. The teaching includes endodontic teaching and coverage of the College of Dentistry’s emergency clinic, starting in the summer of your first year and continuing until the end of the program. In the spring semester, you will also teach in the predoctoral preclinical laboratory course.

Research

Research leading to a thesis or a manuscript suitable for publication is required for the master’s degree. Specific research time will be made available to assist in the completion of the thesis research project.

Salary and Benefits

Advanced Endodontics residents receive a stipend of $14,898 during academic year 2024-25 (effective August 2024). In addition, half of the in-state and non-resident tuition will be waived during the 27-month program. You will be on an annual contract during your residency program.

Clinical Rotations

Beginning in the fall semester of your first year and continuing through the summer semester of the second year, you will be assigned four to five half-days per week in the advanced endodontic clinic. Each student is also assigned to provide emergency endodontic treatment throughout the two years. On a rotating weekly schedule, one student treats only emergencies during his/her clinical assignment.

Our patient population is quite large. During a recent one-year period, our eight graduate students had more 7,350 patient visits and treated approximately 1,500 emergency patients. The variety is excellent due to our wide referral base and includes pediatric, medically compromised and emergency patients; surgical and specialty referrals; and consultations.
